How To Create a Password Protected Zip File In Windows ?


A zip file is a way of grouping and compressingmultiple files so the total file size is smaller and they act like one file.

But Can I create a zip file in Windows and request that it be password protected? Yes, if your file contains sensitive information and you wish to transmit to another PC, then you can create a password protected zip file.

1. 7-Zip is a free software and if 7-Zip isn’t already installed on your computer, download here 7-zip and then run the setup file to get it installed.

2. Using Windows Explorer, locate file/files/folder you want to zip.

3. Right click on one selected file or folder, select 7-Zip and from the sub menu click Add to archive to open the Add to Archive window.



4. Add to Archive window opens; now enter the path and name of your zip file.


5. If you are sending the file to another person, who may not have 7-zip installed, then select archive format as Zip by clicking the Archive format drop down menu.

6. In order to protect your file with a password, move to Encryption menu enter a password in the first field, and reenter the same password into the second password field.   



7. When you have done, click Ok to close Archive window.
